Welcome to the 2009 season. Firstly may I introduce myself as John Foley. In 2006 I went to study a Landscaping course at Askham Bryan College where I increased my skills and overall knowledge of the subject. After leaving college in Summer 2007 I set up my own business Holden Clough Landscapes which has now been running smoothly for nearly 2 years, we provide a fully comprehensive landscaping service for all your needs. For the last 10 years now I have been working alongside my father on the nursery and recently the nursery has been handed over to myself. I have now turned it into Holden Clough Nursery Ltd. If you have not visited the nursery for a few months, or maybe even a few years then we are certainly worth a visit now as we have been making many changes, mainly involving the massive tidying task that we have been set. The aim is to make the nursery more organised and easier for people who visit the nursery to wander around and be able to find the plant of their choice without being hassled by the all too familiar weeds! When you visit the nursery you will find that parking is an issue, at the moment we ask that you park alongside the nursery lane. Our next project on the nursery is to address this problem with the construction of a small 16 space car park which customers will easily be able to drive in, and out of at ease. The car park will be excavated down to road level to give the feel of actually driving into the nursery. The surrounding area will be retained by a natural stone wall, and above this will be planted areas filled with a variety of Shrubs, Small Trees and Herbaceous Perennials. This project will hopefully be taking place over the latter months of Summer, and due for completion by the following Spring. The nursery was established in 1927 by Richard Milne-Redhead and in the early days specialised almost solely in the cultivation of alpine and rock garden plants which proved very popular with gardeners across the north and were soon offered by mail order countrywide. Over the years the range of plants propagated and offered for sale has widened immensely to include many fine herbaceous perennials, shrubs, climbing plants, dwarf conifers and heathers as well as hardy ferns and ornamental grasses. Throughout this time the main criteria of the nursery has been to produce quality plants in a hardy manner with no excessive protection from the elements and at the same time ensure that the range of plants offered is hardy in our North West England Pennine location. On the nursery we have many new exciting plants which we have grown including more varieties of Crocosmia, many more perennials, and several interesting shrubs and trees. We are currently trying to find ways of keeping our website as up-to-date as possible, but this isn't easy at the moment without carrying out some of our plans of re-organising the nursery stock! The list which you browse is as accurate as possible, however if there are any plants that you cannot find on the website then please do not hesitate in giving us a call at the nursery and asking us. Anyway all we can hope for now is that after two awful Summer seasons behind us, is that we get a well balanced sunny (with slight intervals of rain) summer which we and our plants could all do with, and we look forward to meeting all new and existing customers who decide to visit us here at the nursery this season.
